Lev Vygotsky proposed the sociocultural theory of cognitive development. According to him, the cognitive development of a child is the result of interactions with people in society. When a child interacts with peers as well as adults they learn what is important to society and develop their skills and knowledge.

The zone of proximal development means that a child can almost do a task but they need some assistance to accomplish the task. Support and direction are offered by an adult to help the child achieve that task. This support is later withdrawn when it is no longer necessary. Scaffolding refers to support that is offered by an adult.
