In Vietnamese culture, there was a law passed so that women were equal to men when it came to working. Although they are equal in work, they are not equal in their personal lives. In the textbook, Leeder says that “while there may not be physical violence between men and women, intimidation and fear drive the relationships” (Macionis and Benokraitis 2010:251). With this being said, the women in this culture are having to work long hours during the day then come home to work more at their homes. Leeder also talks about death due to violence in Vietnamese culture, “there are numerous injuries and deaths related to violence in the home” ( Macionis and Benokraitis 2010:251). In African culture the women can not have violence towards their husbands or it is considered “criminal” ( Macionis and Benokraitis 2010:252). In the instance a man is violent towards their wives, “there are no specific laws against wife-battering, although a law passed in 1997 provides protection for families, including wives and children” ( Macionis and Benokraitis 2010:252). The biggest difference between these two cultures, Vietnamese and African, is how domestic violence takes place. In Vietnamese culture, violence is not physical but more emotionally draining due to the pressure put on a woman to take care of the house and work a job. In the African culture, “violence against women, including rape, is quite common” ( Macionis and Benokraitis 2010:252). Even though the most common in Vietnam is not physical, they also have a “growing sex trade” ( Macionis and Benokraitis 2010:252).
