Expert Solution
Step 1: Introducing the concept of sleep

Sleep is a process in which significant physiological alterations occur along with major shifts in awareness. A good amount of sleep is essential for an individual's good health. During sleep, the human body repairs cells, tissues and muscles, consolidates memory, restores body energy, enhances the release of growth hormone, maintains the immune system, etc.

Sleep involves 2 physiological states that are detected by electroencephalogram recordings (EEG). One is non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep and the other is rapid eye movement (REM) sleep.

The difference between NREM sleep and rapid eye movement sleep or REM  sleep, is that during rapid eye movement sleep the brain wave pattern resembles that of a person who is awake. However, this stage of sleep is actually a fifth stage of sleep in which the muscle tone is extremely relaxed, and the sleeper appears paralyzed. It is also during rapid eye movement sleep that dreams take place.
