The names of Elements are often abbreviated to simplify formulas using these elements. These
abbreviations are referred to as chemical symbols. For Hydrogen, the symbol "H'; for Oxygen, "O";
and for Carbon, "C". Sometimes two letters are necessary to distinguish between two or more
elements when the names of the elements begin with the same letter. For Example: Ca for Calcium,
Cr for Chromium, Co for Cobalt, Cl for Chlorine, etc. No symbols contain more than two letters and
the first letter is always capitalized. Some symbols are abbreviations of Latin names of elements (l.e.
Fe for iron; Latin, ferrum).
Each Element has an atomic number and an atomic weight. The weight is in relative terms as an atom
of each element is extremely small. As an example: Hydrogen, "H' has the atomic number of 1 and
an atomic weight of1.008, Calcium has the atomic number of 20, with an atomic weight of 40.08.
One atom of Calclum weighs approximately 40 times that of Hydrogen.
The following is a list of Elements commonly found in the soil or atmosphere and utilized by plants
for their growth processes. From the Periodic Table in your text, look up the Chemical Symbol, the
atomic number and the atomic weight.
