Question

I. Balance the ff. redox reactions. Balance them using water in acidic medium if necessary.

Cu+(aq) + Fe(s) → Fe3+(aq) + Cu(s)

Expert Solution
Step 1

The steps involved while balancing a chemical equation by oxidation number method in acid medium are as follows-

(a) Separate the oxidizing an reducing agents.

(b) Write the half reaction for oxidation and reduction and specify the change in oxidation number.

(c) Balance the atoms other than H and O for each half cell reaction if necessary.

(d) Balance the O atom on two side by adding H2O to the side having deficient of O atom.

(e) Equalize the charge on both side by adding electrons to the side having deficient in negative charge.

(f) Add these two balanced half- reactions in such a way that the number of electrons on both side cancelled out. Foe this each half-reaction should be multiplied by some appropriate number.
