To balance the equation by oxidation number method , we have to calculate their oxidation numbers first . 

Steps to balance the equation : 

1) write the oxidation number of each element from both side .

2) if the oxidation number decreases from left to right , it shows that there happens reduction (ie gain of electrons) 

If oxidation number increases from left side to right side,  it shows that there happens oxidation ( ie loss of electrons ) 

3) then write equation balancing their oxidation numbers by adding or losing electrons. 

4) balance the electrons of both equations so that they can cancel each other . 

5) after adding the equation and cancelling electrons , we get the result.
