At least half of Malaysia’s demand for electricity is met by natural gas. In a natural gas-fired power plant, the natural gas is combusted in a highly efficient furnace with excess air to ensure complete combustion and avoid the formation of carbon monoxide. Before releasing the flue gas to the atmosphere, carbon dioxide need to be removed using an amine solvent in an absorber to meet the regulatory standards of CO2 emission set by the Department of Environment. Natural gas composition in mole basis can be taken as 95% methane, 3% inert and 2% water vapor. 100% conversion of methane is achieved in the highly efficient furnace supplied with 20% excess air. The flue gas from the furnace is fed to an absorber where a solvent is used to absorb most of the carbon dioxide in the flue gas before releasing clean air (with less amount of CO2) to the atmosphere. The absorber operates at atmospheric pressure and at temperature of 30°C. The absorber needs to remove 90% of CO2 in the flue gas. Henry’s law constant at 30°C for CO2 in the amine solvent is 0.054 atm/mol fraction. Basis: 10 000 standard cubic feet of natural gas Find Amount of amine solvent required to remove 90% of CO2 in the flue gas.
