As an American and hopeful importantly; a human being, I am deeply troubled by the history of slavery and the Constitutional protections that once were embodied within or Constitution. What gives me some solace and hope is the fact that we have abolished slavery and have removed the dehumanizing institution from our Constitution with the 13th Amendment. In addition, the 14th and 15th Amendment have striven to create equal treatment under the guise of law to all citizens based upon a racial identity. What are your feelings? Does equality under the law and due process truly create equal opportunity and equal access to justice in our nation? Or does racisim and bigotry still make for a divided nation? My own personal belief is that the Constitution and legal standards have come significantly closer to creating a nation where justice and opportunity are equal in our governmental institutions as a matter of record and principle, yet theses standards and requirements are often undermined by racial and economic differences. What answers lie within the Constitution? or is the solution found in some other sphere of our society?
