Chocolate, in all of its varied forms (candy bars, cocoa, cakes, cookies, coating for other candies and fruits) is probably the favorite confection in the world. To say the least,  chocolate is as ubiquitous as a non-essential food can be.

Chocolate all starts with a small tropical tree, the Theobroma cacao, usually called simply, “cacao" that is native to Central and South America but it is grown commercially throughout the tropics especially in Africa. Now, getting from cacao bean to your favorite chocolate treat , the cocoa supply chain is an interesting, bittersweet one.

Specifically, the $130B global chocolate industry relies on cocoa farming for supply of chocolate’s key ingredient. Yet, many cocoa farmers struggle to survive with cocoa farmers in Ghana making $1 per day, while those in Côte d’Ivoire make around $0.78 per  day make.  For the record, The World Bank has established the threshold for extreme poverty at $1.90/day.

Making sense of the global cocoa industry directs out to some key features of global supply chain.
