Project Scheduling and Control
A6 – Schedule Crashing
UNC CHARLOTTE
You pick up the phone and ring Big Mike on the intercom.
"Big Mike, I just got off the phone with Patty. We need to talk" you tell him.
"Who?" he asks.
"Patty. You know, from Patty's Precious Pets. We're paving her parking lot" you explain.
"Oh, Patty, yeah. How is she?" Big Mike asks.
"She is in a hurry. She wants us to shorten our project. She wants us done by the 22nd. She has
some petting zo0 planned for the grand opening and they can only be there on the 26th. She says
she needs the 4 days to get ready. So, that ties us to the 22nd» you tell him.
"The 22nd?! That only give us...." Big Mike trails off.
"18 days. It gives us 18 days. She wants to know how much more it will cost. Let's chat" you
tell him.
"I'll be in your office in 5 minutes. I'm almost done going through that leveling problem you
worked out for me. That's good stuff. We should do more of that" Big Mike says and hangs up.
Five minutes later Big Mike is sitting across the desk from you looking at the schedule network
you just handed him.
"That's our schedule. What can we crash?" you ask.
"Crash? Oh, you mean what activities can we shorten?" Big Mike asks.
"Yeah. Which ones, how much, and at what cost?" you tell him.
After about 30 minutes and several sheets of scrap paper, the two of you have sketched out the
schedule crashing table attached.
"Ok, you talked with Patty and know what she wants. You take it from here. Just keep me in the
loop. This is the last time I take a project just to help out a college buddy. I figured indirect
costs for that project were $500 per day and the liquidated damages are only $400 per day.
We'll help her if we can, but we're going to do what is best for us" Big Mike explains.
With the words "what is best for us" still in your head, you start to crash the schedule.
