although polydactyly is a common limb malformation observed in humans and other species, no modern tetrapods have evolved a polydactylous phenotype as their predominant limb structure. Please present one hypothesis that explains this paradox, and describe how it does. (hypothesis should involve discussion of cellular-level processes, gene regulatory mechanisms, limb/digit patterning, and/or digit functions)

Expert Solution
Step 1

Limb is devoloped from the limb field in the embryo. Limb has mainly three regions

  • Proximal (stylopod
  • Middle zengopod
  • Distal autopod

The shoulder to the finger axis is denoted as the proximal distal axis , the thumb small finger axis as the anterior posterior axis  and the dorsal ventral axis specified by the knuckles palm region.
