Alpha glucosidase inhibitors are generally used in the treatment of type-II diabetes. Alpha glucosidase inhibitors delay the absorption of the carbohydrates from small intestine and therefore they have an inhibiting effect on the postprandial blood glucose and the levels of insulin.
The alpha glucosidase inhibitors (AGIs) are contraindicated in the patients with inflammatory bowel disease, diabetic ketoacidosis, ulcerative colitis, chronic intestinal disease, intestinal obstruction, liver cirrhosis, large abdominal hernias, and any condition that emerge by the increased gas production in the intestine.
