The first European power to arrive in South Africa (SA) was the Dutch in the 1600s. The lives of the native communities like the Xulu, the Khoi Khoi, and the Sans were disrupted by the colonial settlements. However, after the Dutch many other Imperial Powers made their way into South Africa. These included the British who set up plantations and actively participated in the slave trade. Before the British, the Dutch had already settled in SA in small colonies. Many of these Dutchmen even owned slaves.
