The acceleration of the chemical reaction through the addition of a base or an acid is termed as acid-base catalysis. In acid-base catalysis, the base or acid itself does not get consumed in the reaction.
The mechanism of an acid-base catalysis reaction can be explained in terms of the Bronsted-Lowry acid and base concept as one step requires the initial transfer of the protons from the reactant to the basic catalyst or from an acidic catalyst to reactant. In other terms, electrons are donated by the base and are accepted by an acid.
