Poisson Distribution
The mean number of accidents in a certain intersection is 5 per day.
Calculate the folllowing probabilities using the Poisson Distribution Function in Excel.
a. The probability that 4 accidents will occur.
This is P(X = 4)
In cell B3, type: =POISSON.DIST(4,5,0).
The first value is x, the second is the mean, and finally O means non cumulative.
b. The probability that at most 3 accidents will occur. (Less than or equal)
This is P(X S 3)
In cell B4, type: =POISSON.DIST(3,5,1)
The first value is x, the second is the mean, and finally 1 means cumulative.
c. The probability that at least 7 accidents will octur. (Greater or equal)
This is P(X 2 7) = 1-P(X s 6)
In cell B5, type: =1-POISSON.DIST(6,5,1)
Complete the rest of the probabilities from B7 to B10 in the same manner.
*B10 has a strict inequality as to not include the value of 5. Adjust your formula accordingly.
