it is prezygotic or postzygotic isolation.

b. A cross between two fish species occurs but development only occurs up to 16-cell stage.
c. In drosophila, when sperm form one species enters the other species, the sperm is immobilized and

d. Fireflies have a unique lighting pattern. The frequency of lighting is species specific. Fireflies in the
same area will not mate with those having a different lighting frequency.
e. Two species of butterflies are found in northern Michigan, but one species is found only near rivers
and streams, the other near lakes.
B. Read analyze the statements given below. Then, justify your answer.
a. A common farming practice is to breed a female horse with a male donkey. The result is a very
robust animal – the mule. Most mules however are sterile, and therefore cannot reproduce. Are
horses and donkeys members of the same species? Justify your answer.
b. Many species of birds have elaborate mating rituals that include bird calls, nest construction, and
courtship displays. A researcher is comparing two populations of birds with similar morphology that
live in similar niches. Male birds in one population build a nest before attempting to court a female,
while males in the other population build the nest in cooperation with the female. Is it likely the
researcher will classify these birds as the same species? Justify your reasoning.
c. The Amazon River runs through many countries in South America. In Peru, lizards living on either
side of the river look very different from one another. At one time, they came from the same
population, but lizards north of the river are bigger, greener and live in trees. Lizards south of the
river are smaller, browner, and live in rocks. If both groups are put together, will they mate? Will
they produce viable offspring?
