A fin made of aluminum 6061 is 3 cm long and has a rectangular cross section, 4 mm by 8 mm . The film coefficient of the sides of the fin is 100 W/m2K. Do you consider this fin to be well designed? Justify your answer. Offer a redesign if you feel the design is poor. Justify any redesign quantitatively.

Expert Solution
Step 1

The design of the fin can be decided on the basis of the value of fin effectiveness. Fn design is considered good when the effectiveness is  equal to or more than 2.

Data given:

Length of fin = 3cm = 0.03m

Cross section = 4mm × 8mm

Cross section area (A) = (4× 10-3 × 8× 10-3 ) m2

Cross section area (A) = 32× 10-6 m2

heat transfer Coefficient from the surface (h) =100W/m2.K

conductivity of aluminium can be obtained from any standard mechanical handbook

Conductivity of aluminium ( K) = 114 W/m.K

Latest assume that the heat transfer is only taking place from the lateral surface area of the fun and different it is adiabatic. No heat transfer is taking place from the fin tip is assumed.
