to a golf course. The bulk of its substantial revenue comes from electronic gaming
machines and the sales of drinks and food.
a sports and entertainment complex attached
It is situated in a popular and expanding tourist area, and has enjoyed
continuous growth since it opened in 1986.
The club expects greater competition for the gambling dollar in the next few
years. At the same time it expects its convivial family-club appeal to continue
as a strong, positive influence on its business.
The club is owned by its members who elect eight directors every two years.
The CEO, Mick, is accountable to the board of directors.
Mick has seen the club grow from its inception as a small, one room organisa-
tion to a multi-million dollar business. He is due to retire within the next two
years and is grooming assistant manager Ronnie for the CEO role. The directors,
however, intend to advertise the position.
Ronnie has wide experience in the hospitality industry and aspires to be CEO.
In recent years he has been responsible for marketing the club and organising
entertainment. He has many sound ideas that would further market and develop
the club, but is frustrated because Mick is rarely willing to take up his ideas.
Mick lets it be known that he runs the club and makes the decisions. The
directors and staff accept this because of Mick's standing in the organisation over
many years.

management. We need some strategic planning from management."
Ronnie carries out his tasks conscientiously, but frequently makes personal
criticisms of staff and their work in front of others. As a result staff are on edge
when Ronnie is around. In turn this often affects the quality of service offered
to patrons of the club.
Ronnie also clashes with the administration manager, Keith, who is on the
same level of seniority. Keith also aspires to be CEO.
Like Mick, Keith has been in the Rolling Plains Golf Club since it opened.
Keith manages staff pay and the club's accounting system in general. Many staff
have complained of difficulties in correct payment of wages, so that Keith is
viewed unfavourably by the majority of staff.
The gaming areas and bars are managed by Angie whose wide-ranging respon-
sibilities include:
the operation of gaming machines
customer payment and satisfaction
• the operation of bars
• catering
• cleaning
• the planning of the staff roster
• staff selection.
Angie is conscientious in her demanding role. Both Mick and Ronnie have
expressed their satisfaction with the way she performs her duties.
Angie has often given written reports and made recommendations to Mick
and Ronnie on progress in the gaming and bar areas, staff safety issues and a
variety of practical staff suggestions for improvements. These have all met with
essentially negative responses from her superiors. The staff suggestions have been
ignored, and Mick and Ronnie say written reports are "a waste of time".
While Angie believes there is no real process of communication and feedback
between management and staff, she has continued to work in her conscientious
manner.
The club's receptionist, Ruby, is very personable and is popular with both staff
and management. She organises a morning tea for management and staff every
Tuesday. Ruby has also become an important source of information in the
organisation. She is in close contact with Mick, Ronnie and Keith. They obtain
a great deal of their information about staff activity and other organisational
issues from Ruby.
