prosecutor, Leon Jaworski. When asked to hand over the tapes of his secretly recorded conversations at the
white house, Nixon refused to comply and proposed a compromise in which he offered to provide edited
transcripts in place of the actual tapes. They were also inaccurate and incomplete. Jaworski, wishing to
expedite the process of receiving the unedited tapes, appealed directly to the Supreme Court. The Court
