3. Explain how trench warfare was fought.
From the very beginning of World War 1, mobility was very limited. The development of new types of warfare allowed for
more defensive strategies to be utilized throughout the war. The biggest example of this is trench warfare. The trenches were
laid out in a zigzag pattern so that enemy fire could not sweep along the whole length of the trench. These trenches were made
so long that it became almost impossible for the opponent troop to attack from the other side. It could stretch for miles in a go.
The front-line trenches were usually about 2 m deep and protected by sandbags. Firing lines were linked by a section called
traverses/ small, trenches, called saps, probed out into no man's land and served as look-out posts. And communication trenches
led back to a line of support, where command post and reserve companies of soldiers were stationed. The trench warfare also
used very heavy machines & guns during the war such as machine guns & firing artillery. If a soldier was exposed to such a
situation, he would probably die. By digging into the earth, protection from the firing of the opposite side is possible.
