Consider a person as a system and the rest are surroundings.

Now , when the person intakes some food then internal energy of that person increases as every food substance has a calorific value. The body temperature is kept constant by heat transfer to the surroundings. And then some amount of the internal energy is converted to work done when the person goes through daily activities.

 

So, clearly for this system 

work done = positive

heat change = negative

delta U = Q - W = negative
