The blood vessels comprising the human circulatory system are of three types: arteries, veins, and capillaries. In case of systemic circulation, the arteries are responsible for circulating oxygen rich blood from the heart to the tissues. The veins are responsible for circulating oxygen depleted blood from the tissues back to the heart. The capillaries are vessels with very thin diameter where actual exchange of gas occurs between tissues and is responsible for connection between arteries and veins.
