![SCENARIO
You are a nurse in a psychiatric ward. You have a patient under your
care:
Daniel is a 67-year-old resident of a special dementia unit of a long-term
care facility. His family admitted him following an incident in which he
drove a neighbor's car to NLEX North bound and proceeded to enter an
exit access going the wrong direction. Several vehicles were forced into
the median to avoid accident. He was eventually stopped by police
officers who informed his wife, Elizabeth, that arrangements would have to be made for his safety.
Daniel owns a construction business and told the police officers he was "going to work," although
he had been unable to work for the past 3 years because of diagnosed early-onset Alzheimer's
dementia. Since his admission to the nursing home facility, Daniel paces the halls, pulling on hand
rails, doorknobs, and window casings. He repeatedly runs his hands over all door hinges and
latches, kick the walls and doors, moves furniture around in the rooms. Daniel wears a sock on his
left foot, but refuses to wear shoes. He becomes agitated and strikes out with a fisted hand if any
attempt is made to put a sock or shoe on the right foot. Daniel will only take a bath if Elizabeth is
present. He becomes physically aggressive when nursing personnel try to attend to his hygiene
needs unless she is talking to him. The staff has placed pictures of Elizabeth on several doors in
his room and in the shower room hoping to give him a feeling of security with her perceived
presence. Elizabeth comes to the facility several times each day to help with her husband's care.](/v2/_next/image?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcontent.bartleby.com%2Fqna-images%2Fquestion%2F77b7ba62-40a0-43f3-8d00-9de6fa5e7963%2F78b53861-b001-4907-a926-f840146500f6%2Fyvnn23h_processed.png&w=3840&q=75)
