Puberty refers to all the physical changes that occur in males and females as they pass from childhood to adulthood. Typical changes that occur are: Hormonal changes: The chemical substances in the body that act on specific organs and tissues leading to the growth of primary sexual characteristics. Sexuality: The individuals become capable of sexual reproduction because of the development of secondary sexual characteristics. The onset of puberty is linked with many physiological changes that improve functioning. The theory of psychosocial development proposed by Erik Erickson accounts for some of the changes that take place during this period. Adolescences is the period of crucial development because several changes accomplish puberty. Hormonal changes: For men, it is marked by an increase in male sex hormone called testosterone and for women, there is an in female sex hormone called estrogen. This increase in sex hormones leads to a growth spurt, the increase in height and weight. The timing of physical maturation varies widely. In the United States, a young female starts menstruation at the age twelve, however, there are instances of girls their cycle as early as eight or nine or late in their teens. Sexuality: For males, external sexual characteristics develop in a predictable order. Initially, there is a growth of tests, scrotum and public hair and a year later the penis becomes larger and public hair becomes thicker and larger. This is accomplished by facial and body hair growth and voice changes. By mid-teen, the male can produce and ejaculate sperm. For female external sexual characteristics, it develops in less predictable sequences. The first sign is a larger breast or pubic hair. Pubic hair changes from sparse to dense concurrent with further breast development. For females, internal sexual changes include maturation of the uterus, vagina and other reproductive organs. Several years after the first menstrual cycle the ability to carry a baby full term is developed. Physiological changes The neural networks in the brain are redefined that enhances critical thinking, decision making. The bones and other systems showcase improvised function because the part of the body like lung, limbs increase in thickness and volume. Muscle mass increases, coordination improves. The glands of the skin in the face become activity. The "third molars" wisdom teeth appear between fourteen to twenty-five year. Theory: Erik Erikson. Conflict is a normal part of development but during adolescence, this increases. This is due to the existence of role conflict, as the teenager is struggling between the two social roles that are overlapping (dependence on parents and attachments with peers), but are incompatible with one another. The parents are still viewing the teenagers as a child, and this results in a conflict between the parent and the child. Erikson proposed that personality development takes place across the life span and divided them into eight stages. He emphasized on the role of social interaction that influences the development of individual features. An adolescent is going through the stage of identity versus role confusion. At this period, the teenager develops a sense of self and identity. The successful resolution of this conflict leads to an ability to stay true to oneself, while the failure of this leads to confusion in the role, resulting in a weak sense of self.
