![Bonding in
metals
Metallic bonding occurs between metal atoms.
Metals have a tendency to lose electrons and therefore they have relatively low ionization energies for their valence
electrons.
When metal atoms bond together to form a solid, each metal atom donates its valence electrons to an electron sea,
thereby becoming a metal ion.
The metal cations are held together by their attraction to the sea of electrons.
Since there are no localized bonds, these electrons are said to be delocalized.
The delocalized electrons in a metal are highly mobile and free to move around.
