Although the American Civil War was a Home War between the Northern and the Southern states, yet due to lack in the resources, Southern States wanted England's intervention. But on the other hand, the Union and the Northern states were strictly under the zone of no interference from the other countries.
England remained neutral throughout the Civil War since it was in an excellent state ruling India, Australia, parts of Canada, and Africa. Civil was just a geographical nuisance to the Britishers who saw no political and economic benefit of entering into a Land War. Though it helped the confederate states with resources, it was a purely business deal.
France attacked Mexico in 1864, during the reign of the Civil War but didn't recognize the Confederates of the Southern states. It was busy setting up its Empire and sent an army to control and rule Mexico.
