As the asynchronous motor is a constant speed motor, the electromechanical torque acts in such a direction so that the interacting stator and the rotor field can be aligned.
When the synchronous machine is operating as a motor the electromechanical torque produce will act along the direction of the rotor of the motor while when the synchronous machine is operating as a generator the electromechanical torque opposes the direction of the rotation of the motor. Thus due to the positive and negative value of the power angle, the torque of the machine can be positive or negative, thus it changes its nature from the motoring mode to the generating mode.
