1. Yimeng was diagnosed viral encephalitis, why did the patient have an epilepsy attack during the treatment?

2. As a doctor, how can we clear up the patient’s doubts? How could we react when the patient expressed the need to find your superior attending for further questions?

During hospitalization, Yimeng was suddenly unconscious and had convulsions, with her
eyes turned over. The symptoms lasted for about 3 minutes before remission, and the patients
had 3 repeated attacks. Yimeng's parents were extremely woried and asked her doctor in charge
why is there a sudden change in the patient's condition and whether this means that the patient's
situation is worsened. Yimeng's parents also found her attending physician (Dr. Zhang) and
asked whether the previous diagnosis is correct.
Dr. Zhang explained to the patient's mother that Yimeng had an epilepsy attack, also known
as seizure, one of the common symptoms of viral encephalitis. During the disease progress, the
virus will attack the cerebral cortex and the cortical function damage will cause seizures.
However, seizure attack is not necessarily linked with the severity of the disease, and is more
often considered as a sign of cortical damage. Dr.Zhang said that he would give Yimeng some
medication to control the symptoms and monitor the disease progress closely.
Dr. Zhang then prescribed Yimeng with Levetiracetam for antiepileptic treatment and
Yimeng had no further seizure attacks.
