1. Describe how you could choose a sample from the population of all female varsity sports players at College Great. Several sampling methods can be used to choose a sample from the population of all female varsity sports players at Great College. Simple Random Sampling – Each player is assigned a number. The sample is selected by running a random number generator. The players whose numbers are selected by the number generator will be included in the sample. Clustered Sampling – The players are divided into smaller groups called clusters. Players are randomly selected from these clusters to be included in the sample. Stratified Sampling – The players are divided into smaller groups based on certain characteristics they have in common, for example position played, major, or age. Players are then randomly selected from each stratum created to be included in the sample. Voluntary Response Sampling – All female varsity sports players at Great College are sent a survey to participate in the study. The players who respond to the survey are included in the sample. 2. Write out a research question and provide a description of data. a. Write out the  research question  this nutritionist is interested in finding an answer to in your own words. Research Question – Do the female varsity sports players at Great College consume the recommended amount of 2,200 calories per day?
b. Describe what data you would collect on this sample to answer the research question. Make sure you collect data on each  variable  that is part of your research question. The data collected would be the number of calories consumed in a 24-hour period by female varsity players at Great College. All food consumed by the players would be tracked over a 24-hour period and the calories consumed could be calculated to find out if they are consuming the recommended amount of 2,200 per day. 3. State  the null hypothesis,  H o ,  and alternative hypothesis,  H a ,  that go along with your research question: a. In words The null hypothesis , H o , states that the female varsity players at Great College are consuming the recommended amount of 2,200 calories per day. The alternative hypothesis , H a , states that the female varsity players at Great College are not consuming the recommended amount of 2,200 calories per day. b. Using statistical notation H o : µ = 2,200 H a : µ ≠ 2,200 4. Provide descriptive statistics and graph suggestions. a. What  descriptive statistics  would you provide that would help you answer this research question?
The descriptive statistics that I would provide to help me answer this research question would be the mean and standard deviation . b. What  graph(s)  could you provide that would help you answer this research question? The graph(s) I could provide to help me answer this research question would be histogram, bar graph, or scatterplot. Now suppose others at the college get interested in this study, and they want to know if the female varsity sports players consume more calories than female students that do not play varsity sports. 1. Write out this research question in your own words. Do the female varsity sports players at Great College consume more calories than female students who do not play varsity sports at Great College? 2. Identify the two variables you would need to collect data on from each subject to answer this research question. The two variables I would need to collect data on would be the calories consumed per day by female varsity players and calories consumed per day by females who do not play varsity sports. 3. Identify each variable as categorical or quantitative (continuous). Categorical – female varsity sports players at Great College and female students who do not play varsity sports at Great College.

Quantitative – number of calories consumed daily by female varsity sports players at Great College and number of calories consumed daily by female students who do not play varsity sports at Great College. 4. State the null hypothesis, Ho, and alternative hypothesis, Ha, that correspond with your research question: a. In words The null hypothesis , H o , states that the female varsity players at Great College consume the same number of calories daily as the female students who do not play varsity sports at Great College. The alternative hypothesis , H a , states that the female varsity players at Great College consume more calories daily than the female students who do not play varsity sports at Great College. b. Using statistical notation H o : µ 1 = µ 2 H a : µ 1 > µ 2 5. What descriptive statistics would you provide that would help you answer this research question? The descriptive statistics that I would provide to help me answer this research question would be the mean and standard deviation .
6. What graph(s) could you provide that would help you answer this research question? The graph(s) I could provide to help me answer this research question would be histograms, placed side by side to do a comparison or a scatterplot.
