Research Question: Do death rates in the United States differ by region? Examine the census9 data set. It contains one observation (row) for each state. Variables recorded for each state include: annual death rate (per 100,000 population), total population of the state, median age of residents in the state, and region. Put your answers to the following questions in a single pdf file. Include appropriate graphs and SPSS output for each question. (20 points total) 1. Death rate and region 1a. (2 points) To visualize the relationship between death rate and region, generate a box plot of death rate stratified on region (put region on the X axis). Which region appears to have death rates that are different from the other regions? 1b. (5 points) Run a statistical test to determine whether death rates differ significantly by region. State the statistical hypotheses and your conclusions, including conclusions from post-hoc tests, if appropriate. 2. Median age and region (2 points) Generate a box plot of median age, stratified on region. Which regions have the lowest and highest median age? 3. Death rate and median age 3a. (2 points) Generate a scatter plot with death rate on the Y axis and median age on the X axis. From this graph, would you say that there is a linear relationship between death rate and median age? 3b. (2 points) What is the correlation between death rate and median age? Does this correlation “make sense”? Do you think this correlation is likely to be causal? 3c. (2 points) Run a regression analysis corresponding to the scatter plot in 3a. What is the slope coefficient and the p value? Interpret the slope coefficient in words. 4. Do death rates in the United States differ by region? (5 points) Considering all of these findings together, do you think you should alter your conclusions from #1 above? Can you conclude that death rates in the U.S. differ by region? Explain your answer.
