form of chart.
1.
From the standpoint of the firm, draw a flowchart of a typical employee firing process
that includes how a “paper trail” is built of the employee’s violations of corporate
policies, how warnings are administered, and finally how termination is executed.
2.
You repeatedly draw size-n samples from a r.v. that has a χ 2 ν distribution where n is
pretty big. It is known that this r.v. has a mean of ν and a variance of 2ν. What is the
expected value, variance, and approximate distribution of the sample mean?
3.
What are “probability limits” for an s chart? When these limits are used with a subgroup
size of 5, what probability distribution of (n − 1)S 2 i /σ2 is being assumed? Using either
the formulas given in lecture or calculator with inverse CDF functions, compute the .015
and .985 quantiles of this distribution. For an in-control process, what is the chance that
the next subgroup’s si value will plot outside of the control limits computed with these .
015 and .985 quantiles?
4.
You are a QI specialist for United Airlines at a major airport. The quality metric is the
number of lost luggage items (bags) per hour of the day where a day consists of 10
hours. No bags were lost in each of the first five hours, then 2 bags were lost in each of
the sixth, seventh, and eighth hours – and then 3 bags were lost in each of the last two
hours. Treating this metric as if it were continuously valued, construct an X chart with
2.75σ limits.
5.
For an Xbar chart using 3σX¯ limits, find the parameter-change ARL (out-of-control ARL)
for a 2.75σX¯ shift in the mean.

The bar graph shows median yearly earnings of full-time workers in the United States for people 25 years and over with a college education, by final degree earned. (See the attached graph.)
The median yearly salary of an American whose final degree is a master’s is $70 thousand less than twice that of an American whose final degree is a bachelor’s. Combined, two people with each of these educational attainments earn $173 thousand. Find the median yearly salary of Americans with each of these final degrees.

The following data show the average asking rent for 10 markets and the monthly mortgage on the median priced home (including taxes and insurance) for 10 cities where the average monthly mortgage payment was less than the average asking rent (The Wall Street Journal, November 26–27, 2011).Click on the datafile logo to reference the data.
