WEEK 3 ASSIGNMENT 1 Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) Screening Crystal Kimberlin Walden University SOCW 6200- Human Behavior Dr. Nate Cottle December 15, 2023
WEEK 3 ASSIGNMENT 2 Abstract The purpose of the paper is to allow the reader to see the knowledge and experience learned from the ACE tool used with families. It will allow the reader to be aware of what needs to be learned to utilize this tool and what is proficient. The purpose of the ACE tool will also be described in the paper, based off the case of Juan Jr’s scenario. Juan Jr. was the client that was evaluated with the tool so the paper will discuss things that was observed using the ACE tool.
WEEK 3 ASSIGNMENT 3 The Case of Juan Jr. The ACE tool can be used in assessing several different ways to help young children. It can be utilized as a screening tool to be able to identify children who are at risk for adverse childhood experiences. It can be used to provide some interventions targeted to their situation and be able to provide support to those children who could be at risk. Lastly, it can be utilized to monitor children who are at risk to make sure they are provided the necessary services and support. In the article by David Finkelhor (2020), we can see all the different ways a child is at risk and be able to assess a child to better see how/where they need help. ( Elsevier, 2020 ) While using the ACE tool, I was able to assess some things with him that related to his current life situation. The family had a total of four ACEs when I assessed them and three of those were related to different types of abuse such as physical, emotional, and sexual. The fourth ACE that was concluded from the assessment was about neglect. With the ACEs, I was able to conclude from the assessment, that I would make a plan to work with the family to assist them with coming up with a plan to help them work through and heal from the trauma that they have gone through in life. I would also want to work with the family to find some coping skills and strength to find a better outlook on life, despite the trauma they have experienced. Another thing I would work with the family on is to guide them in building some positive relationships with each other and others in their daily lives. The CDC website discusses these types of strategies that are used when working with families that have had trauma and how to assist them with resources, assessing, key identifiers, etc. (2020) By working with the family, I would need to approach with a comprehensive and individualized approach and begin by meeting with the family members to complete an assessment of their needs. This would allow us to then develop a care plan. I would want to work

WEEK 3 ASSIGNMENT 4 with the members of the family to identify their strengths and weaknesses and identify resources. Some other things that I would do to assist this family is work with some other professionals (therapists) to make sure that this family is receiving the support and care that they need. The initial goal of working with this family is to provide support to help them heal from the trauma that they have experienced in their life. By working with this family, I could assist them with developing some healthy coping skills, develop a sense of resilience, and to help them build some positive relationships in life. Understanding human behavior and the social environment book discusses the different development stages within children. (Zastrow, C. H., Kirst-Ashman, K. K., & Hessenauer, 2019) When children go through traumatic experiences, it can cause their development to also be delayed. On the contrary, when working with children who are at risk and assessing them to target interventions and support, we must be mindful that these children have been through traumatic situations so we want to help find the correct resources and support to help them the best.
