Castaneda 1 Taylor Castaneda Kozlowski AWR 101-25 7 April 2021 Q: How does underrepresentation of certain groups affect their education? Although each of these authors bring forth different underrepresented groups within the education system, there are many overlaps where it seems as though they are communicating. They all present evidence to support that underrepresented students which can consist of “low-income, ethnic/ racial minorities” (Hagler) are disadvantaged and don’t experience many of the same opportunities to perform the same as the represented groups. PROCESS: Shen: Underrepresented group discussed, foreign speaking students, specifically Chinese students coming to America, answer: "Your paper would be stronger if you eliminated some sentences in the passive voice." The clashes between my Chinese background and the requirements of English composition had begun. The instruction was probably crystal clear to students raised on these values, but, as a guideline of composition, it was not very clear or useful to me when I first heard it. but can anyone design exercises sensitive to the ideological and logical differences that students like me experience- and design them so they can be introduced at an early stage of an English composition class? Kaplan At the present moment, there seems to be some question about the purely descriptive technique, and a new compromise between description and prescription seems to be emerging. Such a compromise appears necessary to the adequate achievement of results in second-language teaching. Foreign students who have mastered syntactic structures have still demonstrated inability to compose adequate themes, term papers, theses, and dissertations. Steele: limits on educational access that have been imposed on these groups by socioeconomic disadvantage, segregating social practices, and restrictive cultural orientations, limits of both historical and ongoing effect It is the social-psychological threat that arises when one is in a situation or doing something for which a negative stereotype about one's group applies. This predicament threatens one with being negatively stereotyped with being judged Black participants in the diagnostic condition completed more word fragments with stereotype-and self-doubt- related words and had fewer preferences for things related to African American experience (e.g., jazz, basketball, hip-hop) groups rebel at the idea of being assimilated into an institution that "has made them invisible"
Castaneda 2 Kaplan: There are unfortunately many issues with the teaching system. It was actually learned that “a new compromise between description and prescription seems to be emerging… [which] appears necessary to the adequate achievement of results in second-language teaching” (Kaplan, 1). Within the education system, teachers are not properly trained or educated to teach English as a second language, and this is because the system won’t adjust to benefit the underrepresented. Shen: Guys, the underrepresentation of different groups in school is a really big problem, it is affecting their education. Steele: A lot of the disadvantages that students face is because there are “limits on educational access that have been imposed on these groups” (Steele, 613). There is already a stigma attached to underrepresented groups that tend to cause them to be Steele: Yes, unfortunately there are certain groups and demographics that simply are treated different and not provided with the same opportunities. Shen: Yes, there were many instances where simple instructions being given were not enough for me to understand. While it might’ve been “crystal clear to students raised on these values, but, as a guideline of composition, it was not very clear or useful to me when I first heard it” (Shen, 460). This is because we are expected to assimilate and learn the same as everyone else. It makes it especially hard because to succeed "in learning the English composition, meant not to be my Chinese self at all” (Shen, 461). Having to fit into these schools that aren’t even educated on the underrepresented culture and techniques make Kaplan: Schools need to be better. In my case, many foreign students are not given the same opportunities or enough time to adjust to the learning style. Shen: Yes, I can definitely say that as a foreign speaking student, there were many “clashes between my Chinese and the requirements of English composition” (Shen, 459) which held me back because there wasn’t enough communication, and the teachers didn’t take us not

This proves that due to English education not incorporating education about the underrepresented group is the main reason they are even considered underrepresented. If there were more teaching surrounding this, there would less Kaplan: Overall, I think within the education system, there is much room for change to properly benefit these unrepresented students. “The English language lacks the necessary flexibility” (Kaplan, 9) for these underrepresented students to fall into the curve and be as successful and productive as the other students.
