Annotated Bibliography Mouza, C., Codding, D., & Pollock, L. (2022). Investigating the impact of research-based professional development on teacher learning and classroom practice: Findings from computer science education. Computers & Education , 186 . https://doi.org/10.1016/j.compedu.2022.104530 This article focuses on the impact of professional development on teachers and what they do in the classroom. A study was conducted using a mixed-methods design to find a research-based professional development program, investigate the impact of the program, and pinpoint what factors helped with the changes. Data on teacher knowledge of the content, practices, and technology was collected before the survey and after. Findings showed that these teachers improved in all three areas. They were able to use their new knowledge in their classrooms. The teachers recognized the importance of having professional development specific to the content and also having someone follow up with support. Mouza et al. are forthcoming with their theoretical framework, methods, and analysis of data. The data in this article is limited since all of their participants were computer science teachers, making it easy to implement their new learning. While this study did use multiple data sources such as classroom data and interviews, they were missing assessments and class observations. Due to this, there was no student data so the effects of professional development on teacher practices concerning students were not studied. This article helps confirm the importance of making sure teachers are knowledgeable about their content before releasing them in the classroom. An effective school system has high-quality teachers and it requires training to get them there. In further research, I could use this source to explain the value of being a lifelong learner in the 21 st century. Reeves, P. M., Pun, W. H., & Chung, K. S. (2017). Influence of teacher collaboration on job satisfaction and student achievement. Teaching and Teacher Education , 67 , 227–236. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.tate.2017.06.016 This article addresses different types of teacher collaboration and their influence on student achievement, teacher confidence, and satisfaction
within their jobs. A quantitative study was conducted using teachers in Japan and the United States. In the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) there were five questions about various collaborative activities. A strength is that TIMSS assesses random students so it is not limited to one specific school. Another strength is there were teachers used with different years of teaching experience and education levels. A limitation is that only math teachers were used. The TIMSS database had missing values so Reeves et al. used multiple imputation. From this article, it is clear that teacher collaboration is a key component of an effective educational system. This source is helpful because it proves the importance of collaboration on student achievement and teacher confidence. School systems must focus on increasing student achievement and this is one way to do that. Sujarwo, S., Kusumawardani, E., Prasetyo, I., & Herwin, H. (2021). Parent Involvement in Adolescents’ Education: A Case Study of Partnership Models. Cypriot Journal of Educational Sciences , 16 (4), 1563–1581. https://doi.org/10.18844/cjes.v16i4.6013 The purpose of this article is to address the role that parent involvement has on their child’s education. A qualitative study was used to analyze informal and non-formal education. In this case study, parent involvement was defined as all forms of support at home and school between parents and their students in collaboration with the school. Results showed that parents from the lower social-economic class gave less funds and energy compared to their counterparts. They also confirmed that a child’s education needs parental involvement. The researchers implemented a validity test and triangulated the data to ensure the research was reliable before going into data analysis. To collect and record data, they used in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation studies. This study was limited only to adolescents. There was no data related to student achievement. Parent involvement is another key feature of an effective education system. To some parents, involvement is a priority while others take a backseat. This study is useful to address the role that parents play in children’s education. This source can be used to remind stakeholders that parents play a vital role, but they cannot be involved without collaboration and willingness from the school. This article changed my
way of thinking by reminding me that the school has to also do its part in reaching out to parents. The results of the study could be used to educate parents, teachers, and school leaders.
