Amy Johnson OMDE 610 9040 Assignment 3 July 7, 2019 The foundation of learning must have a solid background, and been proven to be successful with students, and teachers over a period of time in academia. Learning theories offer students the ability to exchange ideas in the learning process, based on how they retain information. Learning theories also allows the students to investigate different educational theories and concepts for themselves as they gain knowledge. The focus of this paper will look into Online Collaborative Learning (OCL) along with a constructivist learning theory, then produce an online activity that addresses student needs based on their skills. In this role, we must understand the online collaborative learning theory, and the benefits of the theory. We will be creating a learning atmosphere based upon technology, as well as using knowledge and creativity as part of the objective with this activity (Learning Theory and Online Technologies, 2012) . The learning activity chosen is a peer based review, where students at a local university will review assignments of their peers for an online English class, then submit feedback on the assignments. The feedback will show if the students not only reviewing the paper, but the student who wrote the paper have a clear comprehensive understanding on how the assignment meets outlined parameters such as clarity of thought, learning objectives, and clear academic writing on topics presented to them in the class. The students will also evaluate their peers understanding of APA formatting when reviewing their papers. The grading process for assignments which will go in further detail in the rubric, will consist of how well the students write their papers, but also how well they give feedback to their peers on different areas of grammar, and writing mechanics.
It is the belief of the teacher of the class, that activities such as this one foster learning, creativity, and collaboration among the student population. This is also a way to get the students to think analytically, about learning objectives and how they may be applied throughout the different phases of the learning process (Bates, 2015) . The overall benefit of doing a learning assignment such as this would be that the students get to understand firsthand how to write a term paper, as well as have firsthand knowledge on how to analyze the structure of how the learning styles impact students as they complete an assignment. It is the hope that the students are able to link the objectives or concepts when completing their research on a specific topic. In this activity, the students will be able to experience the entire assignment, from both the student and teacher perspective. The online technology portion of these English classes will take place on Lync. Lync is a technology tool that students can easily access while incorporating a dialogue with each other. The students will be assigned groups and they will be able to have open communication on the Lync platform. They can chat in the group or privately, and ask and answer any questions as they pertain to the assignments. Also, being that Lync is an open resource, the students will have no additional costs to utilize the tool (Pappas, 2016) . An additional reason for using the Lync technology as an access point is it fits into the educational technology at the university. The online portion of this learning activity will be 3 times a week, for 1 hour. The classes will meet on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 11 AM. The rubric for this class is based upon how well the student understands the mechanics of writing, grammar, and APA formatting in their writing assignments. This portion of the grading rubric will account for 50% of the student’s overall grade. The analyzing of peer assignments and the Lync discussions will count for 35% of the student’s overall grade. Attendance will
account for 15% of the overall grade in the class. Students that miss more than two classes will automatically receive a failing grade for this class as well as the learning activity itself. Students that complete the assignment, will be graded on their level of ability and the knowledge they portrayed while completing the assignment. Excellent (90-100) Good (80-89) Fair (70-79) Mechanics of writing, grammar, and APA formatting-50% Lync discussions- 35% of grade Attendance- 15% of grade In conclusion, when looking at online collaborative learning as a theory, it allows students to share in the learning process, while at the same time being innovative and creative in their education as adult learners.
