Green 1 September 25, 2015 Professor Barnes Introduction to Sociology 1301 Barbara Green Reading Assignment Chapter 1 1. What is the major difference between macrosociology and microsociology? The major difference between macrosociology and microsociology is that macrosociology studies are focused on society as a whole, like the population or a large group while microsociology studies focus on the individual social activities, like a small group or face to face. 2. Explain the concept of debunking within society and develop an example. The concept of debunking is exposing and correcting myths about society by bringing meaning or truth to the myths. An example of debunking within society is that is one man is no good, then all men are no good. 3. Compare and contrast functionalism and conflict theory. The comparison of functionalism and conflict theory is that they both view society as a social structure and these social structures exist in society. The difference between functionalism and conflict theory is that functionism focus on how people come together to create society. Conflict theory does not see society as a whole coming together for the same purpose. Note the distinctive features of each as well as common criticisms of each paradigm. The distinctive feature of functionalism is it perserves society and conflict theory reduces inequality. The common criticisms of functionalism is that it support the political status of issues and conflict theory assumes working class don’t rebel. 4. What is the difference between manifest and latent functions? Give an example. The difference between manifest and latent functions is that manifest functions are intended and latent functions are unintended. Examples: Manifest function of a digital camera when it first developed was that people could take pictures of people, places and things. In Latent function when the digital camera was developed was that they would have never expected them to video record and slide shows. 5. What does Weber’s concept of verstehen mean? Weber’s concept of verstehan means understanding. “It’s the interpretive sociologist job not just to observe what people do but also to share in the world of meaning, coming to appreciate why they act as they do.”
