Report
Ethical Decision Making Nagesca Joseph SOCW 6520 Walden University
These events often occurred for me as a former nursing facility employee and current social work intern. I am aware that if they are morally and legally permissible, it is crucial to obey the intentions of the person holding the power of attorney. With an emphasis on addressing the demands and empowerment of marginalized, disadvantaged, marginalized, and those living in hardship, the fundamental aim of the social work profession is to promote human well-being and make a difference in achieving all individual's basic requirements (NASW, 2021). Given that the son retains the legal capacity to act on choices on his dad's behalf, it would be proper in the present scenario to keep Mr. Blakely's devastating diagnosis of cancer confidential. Nevertheless, talking to the son about the advantages of telling Mr. Blakely about the grim prognosis could be moral. Despite the fact that individuals with dementia might suffer from difficulty remembering things and struggle to comprehend or recall their medical condition completely, studies have proven that individuals with dementia still have value by receiving realistic and precise details regarding their health(SocialCareInstituteforExcellence,n.d.).Dementia patients may have trouble making certain  judgments. Nevertheless, they are capable of making others on their own. An individual could be incapable of making decisions surrounding their medical needs. However, they could still be competent to determine decisions regarding their diet or what programs they are interested in viewing (n.d.). Fortunately, notifying Mr. Blakely regarding his terminal cancer diagnosis may enable him to voice whatever concerns or needs and assist him in making the best possible use of
his final days. Consider the potential advantages and disadvantages of telling Mr. Blakely about the illness while having this talk with the son courteously and sympathetically. When Mr. Blakely inquires about the recently acquired medications, it is crucial to be forthright with him while offering precise details on their intended uses. Although it wouldn't necessarily be suitable for him to disclose the severity of his cancer prognosis, it is critical to take into account Mr. Blakely's rights to have information regarding the state of his health and have the ability to make responsible choices regarding the treatment he will receive. Without revealing the precise diagnosis or reason for the discomfort, you may tell Mr. Blakely that the meds are for pain control and to make him feel better. Additionally, it is critical to reassure Mr. Blakely that you are committed to him and will respond to every question or concern he might be experiencing regarding his meds or general well-being.
