Prominent Sociologist Sociologist 1: Dorothy Smith Theory Associated with their work: Feminist Theory Outline what his or her significant contribution to sociology is. Why do we remember and study this person? What was his or her significant contribution to sociological study? Dorothy Smith created multiple feminist theories that are still used today. Some of the most famous ones include the feminist standpoint theory and institutional ethnography. Her theory of standpoint argues that the origin came from women being housewives. She also has advocated for research methods that include interviews and ethnography that look at the everyday experiences of women’s socialization. This can inspire many women to do the same and advocate for their rights and inequalities. Another significant contribution she has made in the development of generations is to make equality between jobs that used to be “only for men” and jobs that used to be “only for women”. In today’s society, any job can be done by any individual, all they need is passion! Sociologist 2: Identify one additional sociologist whom we have studied who is similar and explain what he or she might have in common in regard to his or her sociological thought. Provide at least two reasons. Who: Karl Max Reason 1: Conflict theory which was created by Karl Max is significantly like the thinking and processes of Dorothy Smith. I say this because conflict theory focuses on the inequalities of different groups in society. In feminist theory, we are looking at specific inequalities of women and how they affect them and society. Reason 2: The conflict theory also explains the unequal distribution of power between the poor and rich in society and we can look at this from a feminist perspective such as the power between men and women. Both theories look at how one party is stronger than the other and which therefore can do more in terms of power. For example, women’s rights were not achieved at the beginning of life, and they had to be protested for. This goes in relation to the society of lower-class individuals, and they must work very hard to earn a living. Reason 3: The feminist theory and the conflict theory both face factors of inequality, but in despite of this, both parties look for solutions and things they can do in society or as individuals to bring equality. For example, women might be advocating that they shouldn’t be forced into being a housewife and with the education they have, they want to go and do jobs in the real world. An example of conflict theory that was seen recently, is the Black Lives Matter movement which is a movement that fights violence against black people. With some unfortunate events like the death of Trayvon in 2013 that began this movement and the death of George Floyd in 2020, many have joined this movement to show support for the black community. This movement’s main purpose is to show that black people are individuals, and they shouldn’t be killed and make it seem like they aren’t important. This inequality has been around for thousands of years such as the Underground Railroad which had 30,000 to 40,000 slaves arrive in Canada to do hard labour work and be treated very poorly. It might not seem like there has been a direct solution to this issue, but they are trying and using their voices which is why the BLM movement was implemented. As you can see, in both theories, efforts of solutions are being made to bring justice and equality.
Sociologist 3: Identify one additional sociologist we have studied who is different in his or her sociological thought. Clearly explain how his or her ideas are different providing at least two specific reasons. Who: Emile Durkheim Reason 1: His theory developed structural functionalism by him looking at the ways social institutions and humans interact with one another. I think that Emile Durkheim’s theory of structural functionalism is different from the feminist theory since structural functionalism focuses on interactions between individuals and it doesn’t include details aspects of the feminist theory of inequality. For example, from a functionalist point of view, they might see that the family is equal to function. Feminist who views this, will think that women are responsible for the home and taking care of the children while men go and work to bring income to the family. Reason 2: In structural functionalism, they like to believe that working together as a society in harmony is needed to function. In feminist theory, they believe that any conflict that is caused in society is done by men. They think that men have all the power and control over what is done in society. They think of a division between men and women whereas functionalism looks at unity. Reason 3: Politics come into a major factor in the feminist and structural functionalism theory. Feminists view the government as a restriction of doing what they think is right and equal because of the laws that are in place. Therefore, they think that the government is “bad” and doesn’t benefit them as much as they want them to. In terms of structural functionalism, they will think in the mindset of how the laws that are implemented will bring one another together and how it will benefit society. Lastly, identify a prominent modern social theorist who is working to advance this sociological perspective. Who: Maxine Baca Zinn How specifically does his or her current thinking relate directly back to the original sociologist? Maxine Baca Zinn is a sociologist who focuses on multicultural feminism, and she has changed feminism by letting people of colour to different views of gender. She faced discrimination in grade school by children refusing to play and do activities with her (treating her differently). This was done because of her cultural background as well as because she was forced into the Mexican classes and was not allowed to do classes that white students were in minimizing her education. Some of these experiences in her life made her career choice to bring insight into her life and many others that experience this type of discrimination daily. This thinking of multicultural feminism is related to feminist theory in terms of women being discriminated against into thinking they are not able to do much and have no control, but in this case, race is also looked at it. Different races may face more discrimination than others and this varies on the experiences the individual may have. What new insight or focus does he or she add to this perspective? The new insight that Maxine Baca Zinn adds to the feminist theory is the effect of race on a situation on women. Some may think there is constant racism against black and white women, but other races face just as much discrimination, but it is not talked about enough. Her study of the experiences of Hispanics adds to the diversity of races that face discrimination and we can gain how she used that to make a positive outcome in society. As a result, of her being discriminated against as a child, she has become a professor in the department of sociology at Michigan State University and has made several books & publications on women of colour and discrimination, diversity in families, language inequality,
and much more. Sources in APA Format References Baca Zinn, Maxine: 1942—: Sociologist | Encyclopedia.com . (n.d.). Www.encyclopedia.com.
