Laura Barclay Week Three Discussion Main Post I will begin by discussing the family income in constant dollars. The mean income is $48920.13. The median income is $40645.00. There were multiple modes, but the lowest value was $40645.00. There was a standard deviation of $43654.162. For this variable, the median is the best measure of central tendency because it is the more accurate center point for the data, and means are sensitive to extremes (Frankfort-Nachmias et al., 2019). This data is highly variable, with a broad range of values. While this data is straightforward and relatively simple, its variations can make analysis more difficult. Understanding family income in constant dollars can answer research questions about poverty levels, wealth distribution, and financial planning. The second variable I will discuss is race. The mode is the only appropriate measurement for the central tendency with categorical variables because individuals are either in one category or another with no in-between (Frankfort-Nachmias et al., 2019). The variance of this variable is .432, and the standard deviation is .657. This data is not very variable because the values are relatively unequal; if one randomly selects a respondent, they will most likely be white. This data is relatively simple but can be extremely valuable. Research questions related to this data can examine discrimination and trauma as well as income inequality and police brutality. Laura Barclay Week Three Discussion Reply to Brinda Gress You presented the results clearly and concisely, but it may have been helpful to describe the results rather than give the charts generated by SPSS. I agree that the median is the best way to measure the central tendency of family income since extremes could influence the mean in either direction, skewing the results and making them less accurate (Frankfort-Nachmias et al., 2019). You could also have presented more information on the categorical variable to provide insight into its variability and frequency. The research question you raised is good, but I would like to know how you might use it to affect social change. Have you considered how marital status may impact women's earning potential, thus influencing family income? References Frankfort-Nachmias, C., Leon-Guerrero, A., & Davis, G.
