Community Organizing Perspective Approach Leslie M. Ayala The University of Rio Grande Valley 4302: Social Work Practice II LMSW. Veronica Fuentes
2 Community organizing is a method by which residents identify targets of injustice, communicate grievances, and create community organizations. To create neighborhoods with long-term social environments that are safe and compassionate, community organizations implement strategies and tactics to bring targets to the negotiating table and collectively discuss solutions to community problems. They involve millions of people in the thousands of tenant and neighborhood clubs, churches, neighborhood groups, and social networks devoted to enhancing their neighborhoods, representing every racial and ethnic background, as well as every age, profession, and level of income. The needs, interests, and capabilities of individuals in less affluent communities are frequently ignored or undervalued by government bureaucracy and huge enterprises. (Brueggemann, 2014, p. 243) Community organizations serve as local opposing institutions in these environments. Some of these community organizations use confrontational tactics to reach their goals. A confrontational strategy employs adversarial techniques to make your argument. Strikes, protests, sit-ins, and petition drives are some of the strategies that could be utilized in this strategy. The externally focused acts or activities you carry out to fulfill your advocacy objective. In my perspective, confrontational tactics are a very effective way to get a point across to someone. If you want to be heard sometimes you got to make some noise. Government entities have a history of not taking community organizations seriously. Most of the time they are disregarded or given a temporary fix to the issue when the issue at hand requires an in-depth review. Sometimes being conciliatory and consensually oriented can only take you so far. An example of this is the Black Lives Matter Movement. The death of George Floyd moved them to adopt more confrontational tactics than they had in the past. There had been deaths that started the movement and they protested peacefully but received very little attention from government
3 officials towards the brutality against African Americans from law enforcement. It was till Floyds' murder that more than thirty states passed oversight and reform laws on local police. It was unfortunate that so many lives had to be lost so that the world could see that racism still exists to this day. I don’t condone violence by any means, but I do advocate for those whose voices aren’t being heard. There are both some advantages and disadvantages of using confrontational tactics in community organizing. Community division is one of the drawbacks of the confrontational method of community organization. The confrontational strategy entails forcibly imposing one party's viewpoints on the opposing party. As a result, it can trigger reprisal assaults from the antagonistic factions. Another disadvantage is that the goal might take longer to be accomplished because government entities will not be happy with these tactics making the process even longer. The community organizers using confrontational tactics can be seen as troublemakers or agitators and not be taken seriously. An advantage of using the confrontational approach can help assist the government organization in seeing that it is engaging in distortions, deceptions, denials, avoidance, or manipulations that are impeding the desired change. Using a more conciliatory and consensually oriented can have disadvantages that include groupthink, those with power leveraging their position, and agreeing to make bad decisions. Another disadvantage is that by carrying this approach it can take longer to get your point across to those that are not willing to hear. However, some advantages can help the community organizing process. It can help build trust and relationships between the government and businesses rather than see them as being the bad guys. Both tactics are important and play important roles when trying to accomplish goals in community organizing. I think that they both
