community with a significant Hispanic population, faces unique challenges in addressing mental health concerns due to cultural stigma, language barriers, and limited access to culturally competent services. This project aims to raise awareness, provide education, and promote access to mental health resources tailored to the needs of the Hispanic community in the county, ultimately striving for an awareness of mental health issues and their importance in our lives. PART 1: SCOPE AND CONSEQUENCES Empowering Hispanic Communities: Enhancing Mental Health Awareness in Harrison County, Mississippi" The identified problem within the Hispanic community in Harrison County, Mississippi, is the lack of awareness and access to mental health resources. Local prevalence rates of mental health disorders within the Hispanic population in Harrison County are not readily available. However, according to data from the Gulfport-Biloxi-Pascagoula metropolitan area, which includes Harrison County, Mississippi, approximately 6.4% of the population reported having a disability related to mental health conditions in 2019 (Data USA, n.d.). While this data may not specifically focus on the Hispanic community, it provides insight into the broader mental health landscape in the region. Nationally, nearly 22% of Hispanic and Latino Americans reported having a mental illness in 2021, compared to 23.9% of non-Hispanic Whites (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration [SAMHSA], 2021). In terms of access to mental health services, only 36% of Hispanic and Latino Americans received mental health services compared to non-Hispanic Whites (52%) (SAMHSA, 2021). The consequences of the lack of mental health awareness and access to resources within the Hispanic community in Harrison County are multifaceted. Physically, untreated mental health disorders can lead to an increased risk of chronic diseases due to the connection of mental
and physical health. Mentally, individuals may experience heightened stress, anxiety, depression, and other psychological symptoms, exacerbating their overall well-being. Socially, mental health issues can lead to social isolation, strained family relationships, and difficulties in educational or occupational settings, especially those Hispanics who are away from family and already lack social support. Economically, the lack of access to mental health resources can result in lost productivity, increased healthcare costs, and economic burdens on families and communities. The goal of this Social Change Portfolio is to enhance mental health awareness and access to resources within the Hispanic community in Harrison County, Mississippi, ultimately fostering resilience and well-being. PART 2: SOCIAL-ECOLOGICAL MODEL Empowering Hispanic Communities: Enhancing Mental Health Awareness in Harrison County, Mississippi Addressing the lack of mental health support for the Hispanic community in Harrison County, Mississippi, requires individual, relationship, community, and societal factors. At the individual level, risk factors include limited access to education, employment opportunities, and experiences of abuse, contribute to heightened vulnerability to mental health issues (CDC, 2022). Protective measures, such as culturally tailored mental health education and counseling, life skills training, and social-emotional learning programs, can help mitigate these risks. (CDC, 2022). Being multiculturally diverse and creating a sense of belonging for this community is pivotal for their mental health journey. Within the community, barriers to mental health resources, socioeconomic disparities, and neighborhood poverty exacerbate mental health disparities among Hispanics in Harrison County (CDC, 2022). Strategies to address these challenges include improving access to
community-based mental health services, outreach programs, and culturally competent support networks. By advocating for this community in Harrison County, we can provide awareness and, with that, prevention for mental health disorders that are occurring in the Hispanic community. Furthermore, at the societal level, challenging stigma, promoting cultural sensitivity, and advocating for policies that address systemic barriers to mental health care are essential (CDC, 2022). This would be key for the Hispanic community as they are considered a very close-knit community and influence each other within the community. Implementing prevention strategies across multiple levels of the social-ecological model can promote mental health resilience and well-being within the Hispanic community in Harrison County, Mississippi.
