1 A Multidisciplinary Team for the Daughter of a “Good Man” Taylor M Edwards University of Arkansas SCWK 4013 – Child Advocacy Studies II Carly Franklin 09/12/2023
2 A Multidisciplinary Team for the Daughter of a “Good Man” It is typical for people who are removed from the world of child advocacy to believe that child abuse can be solved with just a quick phone call to CPS (Child Protective Services). Though partly true, there are more professionals involved with each case than most would realize. These individuals make up what is called a Multidisciplinary Team or MDT for short. Each MDT is unique and carefully coordinated so that there are professionals from the most necessary backgrounds so that the proper knowledge and support can be provided to the family and child(ren). For Emily, a 4-year-old female that has been documented with bruises covering her arms and legs (Franklin, 2023), I believe that beneficial members of a MDT assigned to her case should comprise of not just CPS for the initial investigation, but also a medical professional, forensic interviewer, and for the worst-case scenario: law enforcement. Need For a Medical Exam The vignette provided does not state exactly who documented and reported Emily’s bruises, therefore a medical examination would be important to differentiate whether the amount or severity of the bruises are of natural or unnatural (abuse) causes. A medical examination could also show any cracked or fractured bones or potential head trauma. Emily’s mother Cara stated that her husband’s drinking and abusive behaviors have been escalating causing her to constantly fear for her children’s safety (Franklin, 2023). It could be noted that in cases of child physical abuse, it starts off mild to moderate and then grows in severity as the child ages, therefore demanding the need for a more intensive medical examination and documentation of Emily’s and even her 2-year-old brothers physical health. A Safe Place for a Child to Speak
3 As important as a physical examination is, the necessity to provide the child(ren) with a safe space to talk about their encounters with family members and how the family itself functions is imperative for the investigation to gather to correct facts and details before presenting in a court of law. The role of the forensic interviewer is to gather information from the child in a developmentally friendly way. They will start the process by getting to know the child and their life, thus building rapport and then lead into the gathering of substantiating evidence or information. At the end of this second phase, the interviewer would address more immediate needs in a neutral manner and thank them for speaking with them. Emily would more than likely be asked questions about positive memories with her father; fun things they would do, silly moments they would have, etc. This would help her speak about something that maybe happened that she didn’t like or that hurt her, helping the interviewer lean into those negative moments and notate whether they qualified as abuse. A Possible Encounter with Law Enforcement Law enforcement plays a vital role in a MDT by being a bridge between all players for legality purposes. They are there to be consistent in the investigation process and enforce the needs of the child(ren) and treatment, as well identify and potentially apprehend the offender. Law enforcement works with everyone in the MDT and works to maintain the child(ren)s physical and mental safety. Each interview, hearing, or process needs the involvement of law enforcement because they are the ones overseeing the legality side of things regarding practices and protocols. Law enforcement is also responsible for the collection of information, set-up, and presentation in the court of law.
