Dwaynna Moore June 6, 2018 SW 623/624 Summer Internship Dr. Tricia Barrios Reflective Journal Entry Professional Use of Self In the social work profession, the social worker’s use of self implies that the worker has the ability to understand how the knowledge, skills, and values that they have must align with their own personal values and beliefs. Throughout my journey as a social worker, I am constantly growing, developing, and utilizing the knowledge and skills that I have obtained in many different ways in the social work profession. During my internship at Youth Villages, as of now, I have mainly attended training and seminars that have helped me enhance my knowledge and skills as a social worker and also as a clinician in a mental health setting. As a professional, I feel that it is important to maintain training to ensure that I am continuously engaging in lifelong learning and becoming a more effective social worker and practitioner. In order for me to fully advocate for and assist my clients, I must continuously work towards becoming a more competent and trained professional. The training that I have attended have been refreshers for me because I have worked in a residential setting and also in the mental health profession for two years. These training showed me in importance of not becoming complacent in my skills but how I can continuously use opportunities and trainings that are given to become more effective and efficient in this particular field and setting. As a professional thus far, I have conducted myself ethically and professionally. I have also had moments during the trainings that I have attended where I was
able to reflect back from when I first started my career as a social worker up until this where I am now. As a clinical social worker, I view myself as someone who is competent and knowledge but also as someone who wants to engage in more learning. I am very confident in my skills and abilities as a practitioner or therapist, but I am able to acknowledge that I am still wet behind the ears. Throughout my journey as a social worker, I plan on continuing to grow and develop by taking opportunities to gain more knowledge and skills.
