Olivia Adams HUMS – 310 Homework Assignment 3 Unique Characteristics of Military Families Military families face unique challenges that civilian families do not typically encounter. Frequent relocations, long periods of separation due to deployments, and the stress of the military lifestyle can all take a toll on military marriages. Military spouses often need to juggle multiple roles, such as being a parent, a homemaker, and a caregiver for their service member, which can be overwhelming. When it comes to marriage, military couples may face additional challenges, such as frequent separations and a lack of communication due to the demands of military life. However, military families are often known for their resilience and the strong bonds that form between spouses due to the shared experiences they go through. Hence, “a major part of being a military family is the issue of readiness, as it takes a family to defend a nation” (Hall, 2016, pg. 71). Divorce rates among military couples are higher than the national average, possibly due to the stresses of military life. Military divorces can be complicated, as they often involve issues such as child custody and support, spousal support, and division of military pensions and benefits (Hall, 2016). Remarriage is also common in the military community due to the high divorce rates. However, remarriage can also bring challenges, such as blending families and adjusting to a new military lifestyle. From my husband’s perspective, remarriage was tough, not only for him but for his kids as well. I would agree with him; it was difficult stepping into a role as a bonus mom

while also dealing with the backlash from his ex-wife. As a couple, we have learned to navigate this and have grown more potent as a family. Military spouses are crucial in supporting their service member and their family. They often must take on responsibilities such as managing the household, raising children, and dealing with financial matters while their spouse is deployed or away on training. Thus, I can attest that military spouses possess exponential resiliency, hope, and strength, enabling them to overcome even the most difficult challenges (Hall, 2016). They also provide emotional support to their service members, which can be critical to their mental health and well-being. Military spouses are essential to the military community and are often recognized for their sacrifices and contributions.
