Running head: SHORTENED TITLE UP TO 50 CHARACTERS 1 Abstract The use of focused deterrence strategies in policing is part of their attempt to create a more problem-oriented police force to really reduce things like gun violence or recidivism. These types of strategies can be creating task forces for a specific purpose, and they can cover many types of crime. However, I think that the biggest strategy at work might be the one targeted towards recidivism. The data given shows two neighborhoods, one that received focused deterrence strategies while the other didn’t. This focused on reducing crime in the neighborhoods, and the neighborhood who received the deterrence strategy saw a notable decrease in crime, while the other clearly did not. So, one of the probabilities would be where deterrence was applied and the other would be where deterrence strategies were not applied. These two are the purpose of the data, which tells us whether deterrence strategies are worth implementing in a community-based policing attempt. In an article by Champe Barton from “ The Trace, explained how Detroit decided to implement focused deterrence strategies to their police, and it resulted in a decrease in recidivism (Barton, 2019). This means that in some capacities it does work, and the data given in the example shows that 75 neighborhoods did see a decrease in crime and 15 did not from the ones using deterrence. On the neighborhoods that did not use it, 5 neighborhoods decreased crime while 25 did not. By dividing the number of neighborhoods who did have success, it would seem that that about 83% of the neighborhoods had success stories. So, the probability of reducing crime in neighborhoods that receive focused deterrence strategies saw a notable difference. This can be proven by both the article cited and the data given, where the
