1 4-2 Activity: Critical Analysis: Reimagine Diana Trnka Southern New Hampshire University IDS-400-H4015 Diversity Instructor: Kozlowski March 31th, 2024
2 The act of interracial marriage, which was formerly frowned upon and even criminalized in many countries, has grown more common in recent decades. This transformation is reflective of a larger trend in society towards accepting and embracing diversity. However, despite improvements, interracial couples frequently face a complex web of prejudices, preconceptions, assumptions, and attitudes that impact their relationships. I will examine two major elements that impact interracial marriage, points out a possible roadblock to society's involvement in the subject, and imagines how positive engagement could change the way diversity is discussed in society. Societal prejudices and preconceptions are among the most common elements impacting interracial marriage. Racial equality has come a long way, yet many communities still have long- standing biases. These prejudices aren't limited to the outside world; they can also take root in households where there are strong cultural or ethnic norms and expectations for how members should behave. Many people's biases against interracial relationships have their roots in the past and have been passed down through the generations. Many interracial couples face difficulties gaining social acceptability and, in some instances, establishing a sense of self-worth and identity due to the common notion that people should marry within their own race in order to maintain cultural or racial identity. Differences or similarities in perspectives can play a role. An individual's identity, as well as their decision-making processes (particularly those associated with selecting a life partner), are deeply influenced by their values and beliefs. Couples of different races may find themselves at odds with one another due to inherent differences in their worldviews. There are benefits to having different viewpoints in a relationship, but there are also potential drawbacks. There is societal pressure for people to have commune values, which can make it hard for couples to
3 work through their differences. These difficulties can be magnified when couples face criticism or rejection from outside sources, which further distracts them from the special qualities of their connection. One major roadblock to having a productive conversation on interracial marriage is the way interracial couples are portrayed in entertainment and popular culture. When people talk about interracial relationships too superficially, they risk encouraging prejudice and preconceptions. Instead of highlighting the complexity and variety of everyday life interracial relationships, media portrayals of them tend to center on idolization or conflict. This biased depiction keeps people from talking openly about the pros and cons of interracial marriage, which can lead to more prejudice and misunderstanding. Conversations that can change society can start with constructive involvement that rejects stereotypes, celebrates diversity, and encourages open discussion. We can help society embrace love and working together more fully by bringing attention to the benefits of interracial marriage, such as the merging of different cultures and the elimination of racial barriers. Important roles in this change are leadership and education. In order to mainstream interracial relationships, lessen stigma, and promote a more accepting society, it is important to showcase various stories of interracial couples in media outlets, literature, and education. In the long run, this has the potential to cause a major shift in society's perspective on diversity and inclusiveness, providing interracial marriage irrelevant to the larger discourse around human relationships. A marriage between people of different races is a reflection of the larger difficulties and possibilities of a varied society. Getting society to engage more effectively with the topic requires addressing prejudices, attitudes, assumptions, and values, as well as overcoming hurdles such stereotyped media representation. As a result, people may become more skeptical of variety
