1 Theory and Family Assessment Charlis Brown McKay Department of Social Work, Walden University SOCW 6121 Dr. Alex Casiano   December 6, 2023
2 Theory & Family Assessment When working with a family, it is crucial to apply theory. Giving social workers a strong understanding of the multifaceted individuals that comprise the family is beneficial. It is helpful for social workers to comprehend what influences each person's decisions by knowing their values and assist in determining what is best for the complete family unit. Social professionals can more easily identify current impacts on the family structure as a whole with this foundation in place (Van Hook, 2019). In addition to environmental stressors like unresolved issues within the family, communication barriers, and disassociation from community support, Van Hook (2019) claims that assessing the issues helps identifies areas of family improvement. By utilizing diverse theoretical frameworks, social workers focus on identifying, analyzing, and evaluating the strengths and pressures present in the family context (Toseland & Rivas, 2017). Dynamic thinking about the structure and operation of families is made easier by the guiding concepts of systems theory. Families have their own methods of interacting with society on the inside as well as the outside due to differences in values and views (Rasheed et al., 2010). Since that is how they were raised in Puerto Rico, Juan and Elena Hernandez believe their punishment is not severe nor traumatic (Walden University, 2022). Being enabled to process the full dynamic of the relationship, the systems theory and developmental viewpoint will help make an informed assessment. A family's interactional systems may unintentionally perpetuate and reinforce these habits in addition to providing a function or purpose (Rasheed et al., 2010).   Under the developmental approach family’s environment's social structures and resources can be used to determine how well a family or group is functioning. The FAD has sixty statements describing many aspects of family functioning. Family members assess how well their home is described by each statement. The Family Assessment
3 Device (FAD) measures the organizational, transactional, and structural components of families. The communication, roles, problem-solving, affective responsiveness, behavior control, effective involvement   , and a seventh scale that evaluates overall functioning are the six MMFF components that comprise the FAD (Toseland & Rivas, 2017). This instrument is employed to screen and identify families experiencing problems, along with the domains in which those problems occur, and to assess treatment-related changes in clinical practice and research. This assessment tool can assist in the formation of the treatment plan by addressing some of the issues the Hernandez family face more effectively (Toseland & Rivas, 2017). Additionally, it will increase their self-confidence in their issues that they may face in the future. Through this assessment of the Hernandez family, the knowledge of being able to recognize both healthy and harmful tendencies while also teaching them the fundamental skills required to manage their emotions, cope with stress, and get along with one another will be created. To create a treatment plan for the families, FAD will assist in gathering data.In order to carry out this plan, support is needed for communication, relationship-building with children, and a culturally sensitive approach to mental health issues (Stevens et al., 2021). This shapes my judgment of the Hernandez family by directing my focus on determining the potential for social and economic impediments that could impair the parents' capacity to discipline their kids properly.Stressors from the outside world might cause problems for the family's dynamics at home. The provision of more efficacious techniques for addressing problem conduct in the treatment plan is contingent upon the ability to identify behavioral patterns. There are many factors that shapes the way an individual process emotions, feelings, and thoughts. Effective evident based interventions are vital in assessments, treatment plans, coping strategies, and continual treatment outcomes that will help meet the need of those that we are dedicated to.
