1) Imagine you are a sociologist tasked with creating a research study using a survey design. Your response should answer the following questions and incorporate at least three key concepts. What type of data do surveys gather? For what topics would surveys be the best research method? What drawbacks might you expect to encounter when using a survey? To explore further, ask a research question and write a hypothesis. Then create a survey of about six questions (and answer categories if close-ended questions) relevant to the topic. Provide a rationale for each question. Now define your population and create a plan for recruiting a random sample. Surveys are a unique way to gather data. “ A survey collects data from subjects who respond to a series of questions about behaviors and opinions, often in the form of a questionnaire” (textbook section 2.2). A lot of scientists use it to gather marketing needs and strategies, instead of testing a hypothesis or contributing to social science knowledge. Sociologists conduct surveys under controlled conditions for specific purposes. Surveys are made to see how people think and feel rather than seeing how an animal does in the wild. It’s also important to note that while surveys are one of the easists ways to collect data, it still allows the person taking the survey to remain anonymous. Survey’s can also be made for a smaller group which is called a sample. A sample is a smaller number of people that represent a larger population. A good example of a question that could be asked in a survey would be, was today a hard lesson? Another example would be Is a hotdog a sandwich? As you can see the questions are not really a science based question more like a fun way to collect data for a large population. Some drawbacks for a survey are people may not be telling the truth about what they believe. Some people will not answer at all because the survey answer would pertre them in a bad manner. There could also be data failure. 2) How do sociologists explain cultural differences, when it comes to things like food and music, values and norms? To answer this question, you should explain how sociologists understand the two concepts of “cultural relativism” and “cultural universals.” To do this, you should clearly define each of these terms and incorporate at least three additional key concepts in your answer. Your response should also incorporate at least one real-world empirical example from the text or class discussion. “Cultural universals are patterns or traits that are globally common to all societies.”(textbook 3.1). I am going to use a good example of a cultural universal from the textbook, the family unit. Every society has a family system. Even though everyone has one it doesn't mean we all do it the same. In many Asian cultures the whole family lives in one house, the grandparents, the parents and the kids. Sometimes the aunts and uncles and cousins all live there too. A Lot of the time they also live at home until they aren't married. Where in North America alot of
young adults have their own apartments or houses before they get married. They are expected to have their own place to live and be on their own. On the other hand “ Cultural relativism is the practice of assessing a culture by its own standards rather than viewing it through the lens of one’s own culture.” (textbook 3.1) While studying cultural relativism it is necessary to keep an open mind while trying out new values and norms. Even though trying to keep an open mind is not always easy,it is something we must try to do to get the full experience. I am going to use an example from the textbook. It would be really hard to go live or visit a country such as Ethiopia or Sudan because the women are treated so differently. The women for the United States are used to having political rights and being able to show their faces, and being able to work , whereas the women for Ethiopia and Sudan don’t have those opportunities at this time. This would be very hard for a Sociologists that are women to engage in these cultural relativism.
