Week 7 Special Populations and Distance Counseling Identify a population that might be challenging for you as a future counselor. Explain why. A population that I’ve identified that might challenging as a future counselor would probably working with families. This might be challenging for me because you not only have to address the needs of one individual but you are assessing multiple people so that can be a bit of a challenge especially as a new counselor starting in the counseling field. When working with families you’re working clients that each bring their own beliefs, values, personalities, motivations, agendas, and challenges. So trying to meet the needs of each individual person can be bit of a challenge Another challenge I thought about was scheduling everyone at the same time especially if everyone doesn’t live in the same household. It also might be difficult when multiple clients because one person might feel like you’re not addressing their needs or siding a particular person so these are things that I thought about that might be a challenge for me while working with families. I also thought about when your working with families, especially when your working with children and adults. This dynamic might not be the easiest because a lot times children are not more forth coming when a adult is present and would prefer one on one services. Identify what population might be suitable for distance counseling. How would you determine that? The population I’ve identified that might be suitable for distance counseling would be elderly clients and clients who may have a disability. Distance counseling for this population might be the only option for them to receive counseling service and it’s important to be flexible because this might be the only accommodation that works best for them, I also thought about clients who are more technology savvy. We live in an age where people are more accustomed to their phones and their laptops so this might be a comfortable thing, something they’re more familiar with. Covid has also caused a sort of shift and more and more companies are leaning towards using virtual services and so people might have become more accustomed to using virtual services I also thought about People who live in more remote areas might find that distance counseling is more convenient. Also, people who may have transportation issues are not able to come in person. This might be the option that works best for them. I know my mother does a lot of her appointments online and she’s older and has a disability so I think it more beneficial for her to see her doctor that way unless she absolutely has to go in the office then she does.

Explain how you can expand your knowledge of these distance formats in this enhanced technological world. Counselors can expand their knowledge by staying abreast of new technologies and what’s current. You can take advantage of webinars and online courses that can help you touch up on your skills as well as learn about new technologies. This can help a counselor reach a certain population and be current with the latest advancements. I think it’s important that we can advocate for clients whether they’re able to come in person or not and understanding that in person is not always an option. I just started volunteering as an online crisis counselor and the training was online and even the services itself that we provide is online and so I just think its more convenience for people to just pull out their phones and laptops and receive the services they need.
