COVID-19 AND LEISURE 1 COVID-19 and Leisure Briana K. Mitchell California State University, Sacramento
COVID-19 AND LEISURE 2 During the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, many parts of our daily lives were changed, and very quickly. The pandemic significantly changed leisure activities for individuals and communities. In the USA Today article by Rodney B. Dieser, he points out how resuming social activities too early not only puts our health, but other people’s health at great risk. Yet knowing this, many people found it difficult to practice social distancing and to stop interacting with others so close. Dieser states in the article, “It’s so easy to forget to social distance. Gradual exposure linked to enjoyment and compassion will cause us to let down our guard” (Dieser, 2020, para. 6). Since social activities bring enjoyment and compassion, that can make it very tempting to let our guard down and forget to distance ourselves from other people. However, the article states how important it is follow these distancing rules to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Communities of color have been disproportionately affected during the pandemic and have felt severe health and economic impacts. These two impacts relate to how their leisure opportunities became very limited. Blacks and latinos specifically were most affected, why? According to an article by Boston Children’s Hospital, “This is in large part due to deep-rooted social and health inequities (disadvantages that cause them to receive less care and lower quality of care than other populations)” (Ellis, 2021, para. 3). Communities of color were reported to have had higher infection rates, higher mortality rates, and faced more economic hardships during the pandemic. Due to having health inequities such as limited access to healthcare, and economic hardships due to high unemployment rates, barriers were created in regards to leisure opportunities for them. When some leisure actitities were temporarily put on hold as per the stay-at-home orders and social distancing rules, many people made adjustments to how they performed their favorite leisure activities. Many of those people who made these changes may have kept them long after COVID-19 faded. If the social distancing guidelines and regulations were put in place again, anyone who stuck with the changes they made to their leisure activities would not have much of an issue. It would be crucial for everyone to engage in their usual leisure activities in a way that the health of themselves and everyone around them are safe. The best way to do this is to figure out a way to get the most out of leisure
COVID-19 AND LEISURE 3 activities, but at home, or outside while distancing from others. As an example, when the fitness centers shut down, I found alternative ways to exercise such as taking up riding a bike and going for walks. Before that, I had not ridden a bike since I was 13 years old, and I realized how much I still enjoyed it. In conclusion, the COVID-19 pandemic altered the ways leisure activities were done for individuals and certain communities. Communities of color had been disproportionately impacted during this time, and faced restrictions as to their leisure opportunities. If the social distancing rules were put into place again, many people would have to create adjustments to how they do their leisure activities in order to protect the public and themselves.
